Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

It's annoying. I stopped relaxing my hair last year and i cut of my relaxer and I wore my hair natural. It was in a small afro and when I went to school all the guys were like you look better with longer and straighter hair and they said that I look like a African. I used to get teased a lot by it but now I don't care cause I don't have to had behind damagaed and artifical straight hair like some of these black women out here. It bothers me that black men can wear dreads, cornrows, afros, braids, and twists without getting criticized for it or teased. But if a Black woman wears her hair nautral or short people always have something to say about. I'm glad that I don't have to damage my nautral afro-latino hair assimlate into white american culture. Hopefully more and more Black people will go natural, we look our best when are hair is curly and kinky.

Congratulations. I've almost always worn my hair natural. From a TWA so short you couldn't pinch it, let alone pick it, to a big and fluffy afro, to braids and finally the long locs I'm rockin' now at 50. I've been called everything from diva to dyke. I've never sweated it when haters tried to lable me because I know who I am.

When they said diva, I smiled and said, "Sho' you right!" When they said dyke, smiled again and I said, "No, you got your people mixed up; but I ain't mad at your mama and your sister!" Baby, just be confident about yourself!

Remember that talk is not only cheap, but if words cost money and brains were dollars, some people wouldn't be able to pay attention.

You're beautiful! You better believe it, FIRST!

Nobody said we couldn't wear our hair Natural you chose to

thats not true. my friend is trying to take out her perm w/o cutting her hair. if she has too, shell do it when she is a bit older. for men to say "you look african" is like an insult to all african american people. I think natural black hair is way more pretty. Its more exotic plus more healthy. By putting relaxers in your hair your severly damaging. After 5-6 years its permentantly damaging. She is trying to take it out after 2 years though. Twisting, Braiding and Dreadlocks make your hair 5 times longer. Sometimes it grows faster than my hair which is more straight. Thats why alot of black men have hair past their shoulders. If you want straight hair, press it instead of using chemicals.

I guess thats just the way of this culture these days.

well not all blks hair is like that naturallly. Some blks are mixed with other things. Natural my hair is straight and fine at root, s-curl toward the bottom. and your avatar should have the "natural fro" that you represent.

Some woman look absolutely gorgeous with natural hair. I wouldn't let anyone dictate how you wear your hair. Wear it how you're comfortable.

White women can't just look like white guys either. Almost all white chicks highlight their hair and have to shave and wear makeup or guys will balk. None of us can really be natural and be beautiful in their eyes. I think black women look much better without makeup than white women do. Be glad of that. Be who you are and feel beautiful and you will still attract plenty of the right kind of guys. The more women who do it, the more accepted it will become. They are small minded men.

I think you have answered your own question, influence from the mainstream culture. It's something different and doesn't fit with what is shown as the epitome of beauty, which isn't since beauty comes in all forms.

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

I'm not Black but I actually think that natural %26amp; short looks really sophisticated. (especially if you have good cheekbones.) I've seen some women go from long relaxed hair to very short %26amp; natural %26amp; they really looked beautiful.

It's not true, but I understand, I don't have a relaxer and I have Afro-Asian hair I use to use a relaxer but I never did to go natural my hair could just be straighten w/ a blow fryer and flat iron. But I understand what you feel and you have to understand some people follow fads and that's okay you are being yourself . Amazing how do you feel about it? have fun

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

I haven't had a perm in five years. I used to despise my naturally kinky, elastic hair, but then I realized that this is what is in my genetics and to hate my hair is to hate myself. I love my hair, and I wear it natural and will continue to do so. Black men and women, or anyone else for that matter should wear their hair as they wish, everyone else be damned!

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

Well where I live that's not necessarily true... The black boys or men I know do many things to their hair to make it seem as though they have "nice textured" hair. Yes black women do wear weave, but even some don't and they wear their hair naturally. Most women don't wear their "real" hair because they feel too self-conscious about it from the remarks of others.

I do not blame you for being irritated by this. My personal opinion (take it for what it is worth) is that natural hair is so much more attractive on both men and women. My daughter has a BEAUTIFUL afro and I pray that she will always feel it is as beautiful as I do. I agree with you that people look their very best the way God made them and when they are comfortable in their own skin (or hair in this case). I am not going to judge anyone who chemically treats their hair, I just think natural is beautiful.

Nobody is stopping you, and I'm black but I don't have kinky hair, mines is more wavy. I know a black girl who took out her braids and wore here hair natural, no one bothered her about it except for touching it a lot(she has one big hell of an afro). Probably those guys where ever you live at, are brainwashed.

how do you define "natural"?

you mention cornrows and braids... those are not natural. they are a style.

if someone's hair grew straight out of their head in cornrows or braids, then you would have an argument.

ladies may use straightener or what have you, but again, its a style.

all people have their individual styles - some like long hair, some short, some curly, some straight, so highlighted, some not.... you can find cornrows, but you can also find mohawks.

where people get noticed (for good or for bad) is for being outside of the norm. these days, short hair for guys (not quite a military cut) and shoulder or so length hair for ladies is more common than anything else - deviate from that and you are outside the norm.

you simply deviated it all. nothing wrong with that, but its hardly natural - you do cut your hair right? cutting your hair isn't something provided by nature, its provided by man and his tools. what style is popular is based on culture and fashion - these are also not natural - they are human. for a hair style to be natural, it has to evolve over hundreds of thousands of years... sorry, but the crew cut, the corn row, the mohawk, the beaver cleaver, the bob, the beehive, those are all at most, 50 years old.

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

It's probably because most black women in the media ... recording artists, actresses, etc...straighten their hair, so its what's 'popular', and what guys prefer. I think natural is best for any race, and I've always loved dreads. I'm sure your hair is beautiful just the way it is! Don't change for anyone =)

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

There is nothing wrong with wearing your hair natural. I've worn my hair natural for the last 6 years and I've gotten nothing but compliments. When I had long hair it didn't do a thing for me, so it really just depends on your facial features. Some black girls can't wear their hair short like a guy's, it just doesn't look right on them. It works on me though and a lot of guys tell me so. If you like how you look with a natural then be happy with you. Don't let some clown try and make you feel bad about yourself. Never give anyone that kind of power over you. Wear your hair as you like.

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

"Hopefully more and more Black people will go natural, we look our best when are hair is curly and kinky. "

I agree with that so much; I was at my school today and talking to a teacher who had her hair permed just a few months ago and now she says she's going natural. I was so stoked.

But to answer your question I guess it is a double standard or something that we ourselves have to change

Why is it that Black men can wear their hair nautrally and Black women can't?

In December of 2005, I went to the Barber and cut my hair off, like a boy. I have never gotten more attention from men. I have since let it grow in natural (for the third and last time in my life) and I LOVE IT. I now have a beautiful 'fro that I get compliments on every day from men and women. I think it's about me and my confidence. At first, I was self-conscious and now, I LOVE my hair so how can anyone else not love it? I have only had one person (an aunt) say she did not like my hair and I told her it was a personal problem and it had nothing to do with me. Why should my hair have any effect on anyone else? It's MY hair, not theirs.

Black women can wear their hair naturally and they have to do so with pride, when they make the choice. The more confident they are, the more confident others will be.
