I am also African american and have relaxed hair. I have the same problem as you. Trying to get my hair in the wet wavy look, I've tried so many things. It's actually called scrunching. If I have time, I buy a mousse, gel, or even John Frieda's Dream Curls, I part my hair in sections, and then spray it with the product. I take each section in my hand and squeeze it till the hair forms into a S shape for about a minute. I do this all over.. and then let my hair airdry. What i try to do before I start is put some time for frizz ease serum in my hair first while it's wet before I do this. John Frieda also has one you can buy.

Now when I'm in a rush, and as I experimented a little more, I noticed that braidouts, or twist outs were waaay better. I can do this when my hair is wet or dry. If its dry, I have a spray bottle nearby with water so I can wet each section as I twist. I twist my hair back in cornrows...I do about 6 or 7 braids. It's really up to you. I add a gel, and oil and twist all the way back. If i have time, I sit under the dryer for about 15-20 mins (all depends on how thick your hair is). When I take it out, it's very wavy. :).

You can braid or twist its all up to you. I twist mine back in cornrows. It's easier for me. When it's dry I oil them, or whatever I use to make shiny, and it's done. At night retwist, and I'm good to go for the next day. If I do a neat job , and use gel, I don't have to re twist it at night. This can last me the whole week. It all depends on how well you take care of it.

I've included a link so you can get an idea on how to do it.

There is such a product called wave noveau that gives you that natural curly, wavy look after washing and conditioning your hair. It lasts about 2 months and gives you the look you want. Ask your stylist for more details.
